General's Mission
Pure Phonix News and Announcements Center

/salute
Soldiers,
As some of you are aware, the members of the United States Southern Division of the GA were entrusted with a recent mission. Initially a request to hold some funds for a Mr. Kirby Smith, the mission has since spiraled out of control, leading up to the eventual kidnapping of Lt. Mr. Clean and the notice of a very severe threat to him, Mr. Smith, and the GA in general.
Luckily, through the hard work and dedication of many soldiers in the South (and other divisions as well!), along with ground assistance from Mr. Smith, we were able to recover Mr. Clean this morning. He's currently at HQ for debriefing, but has since informed me that the mission has become a lot more dangerous then we first thought.
I was told to make a post here, in the Mess Hall, with a summary of the events leading us to this day.
We need the assistance of as many soldiers as we can get, from all companies and divisions. This has expanded far beyond a local skirmish, as you'll see in the summary, and could potentially touch upon everything in the GA. It is my sincere hope that you can assist us with your knowledge and skills.
If you'd like to, check out the original thread here: http://forums.purepwnage.com/index.php?showtopic=88610
We're counting on your support, everyone.
-Sgt. Amethyst
Summary of events until 17 May, 2009, 10:02pm (all times Eastern Standard):
(Just as a note: I'm trying to keep this as condensed as possible, but also trying to give credit where credit is due. I'm going to be skipping over the majority of the conversation, and keeping with the major facts as closely as I can. If I missed something, or didn't credit you or someone properly, please let me know.)
5 April, 2009: Agent Outlaw*sx received an email from one kirbysmith6666@yahoo.com. In it, Mr. Smith stated that he, along with his colleagues, were looking to transfer funds- the sum of U.S. $1337- to an overseas account for safekeeping. He then requested that we send along the company's name, ID Numbers, Email addresses, Wii numbers, Live Gamer Tags, and Steam ID's to apply payment. In the postscript, there was a binary message. The first post and email in its entirety can be found here: http://forums.purepwnage.com/index.php? ... &p=1696170
It was discovered that the name Kirby Smith was a reference to a General Kirby Smith from the Civil War, confederate side. On Kirby Smith's wikipedia page, there was a reference to his boss, one Jos3ph Johnst0n.
Lt. Ack Attack translated the binary message, which read: I am in your territory...may the south rise again
6 April (a few hours later):
Agent Outlaw*sx found a YouTube channel which contained a video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DGx0donoQPI The video had scant information, and the background sound was somthing similiar to a computer dialing into the internet from a modem. In the infobox was some decimal numbers; when I cross-referenced them from an ASCII table, the message said: Expect us...all of us
There was some suspicion that this may have been a prank, until Brigadier General ViRuS52 stepped in and confirmed it was not. GAHQ had caught a message encryption stream as it passed through British servers during a routine packet- sniffing exercise on the evening of the 5th. Although there was hard work from everyone, no new leads were found.
7 April:
Through compliance from Southern Division soldiers, I sent an email to Mr. Smith with a few soldiers information included. You can read a copy of that here: http://forums.purepwnage.com/index.php? ... &p=1697360
Later that evening, a few of us began to receive profile comments. Agent Pulsar confirmed that others had some, and Agent SteelFox arranged the comments received in chronological order: QUOTE Amethyst If you cut off the head, the body is useless Today, 06:41 PM
Outlaw*sx If left unchecked it could multiply 10 fold Today, 06:43 PM
j4m3s Just like Sherman's march Today, 06:44 PM
CaptainBaconMan It kills.... Today, 06:46 PM
Mr. Clean: The people it kills get up and kill Today, 06:47 PM
8 April (around 11:00PM):
Agent j4m3s received a phone call from Kirby Smith, who said: Be Expecting the Funds of momentarily. I also received a reply to the email, which read:
Dear Sgt. Amethyst, Thank you ever so much for accepting our offer! One of our spokesman will be tranfering the funds promised to one of your accounts as soon a humanly possible!
Thank you again, Kirby Smith
11 April (around 1:00 AM):
I received an AIM message from one kirbysmith6666. We exchanged pleasantries, and then he transferred funds over to me- those being http://i187.photobucket.com/albums/x260 ... merica.jpg (It appears that the original link has been broken. A thank you to Agent Z0mb13 for saving the image!) He then briefly spoke of my leadership skills, comparing them to a ROB3RT L33, saying that L33 strived for so much. Afterwards, he mentioned that there 'wasn't much time' before 'they' began to track him, and left- but not before getting my telephone number. He then quickly disappeared, then came back online to send this message:
"Keep your eye in the sky for something that may fly for that is the answer for the warm morning breeze"
A transcript of the conversation may be found here: http://forums.purepwnage.com/index.php? ... &p=1699249
Incidentally, Lt. Fate found ROB3RT L33's profile on the forums around 2am. It seems to have disappeared since then.
Through the sharp eyes of the soldiers, we noticed a few differences between a standard dollar bill and the funds allocated to us. You can see what they are here: http://forums.purepwnage.com/index.php? ... &p=1699741
Later that night, around 8:35 pm, I received a PM from one John Doe56733.He informed me that he knew of my being contacted by Kirby Smith, and insisted that I tell him with Smith told me. I refused to answer numerous times, saying that I didn't know anything. By 8:41, he mentioned Mr. Clean by name, and I kept refusing to answer the question. By 8:46 pm, he threatened to shoot Clean in the head if I didn't cooperate with him. He also mentioned D.I.X.I.E at one point-
[Sat Apr 11 2009 08:49:06 PM] warhaschanged: I wouldn't have said it otherwise. These men have nothing to do with your unresonable demands, and as such, should not be involved. [Sat Apr 11 2009 08:50:51 PM] John Doe56733: D.I.X.I.E. would say otherwise
The conversation continued, and at around 8:57, he went AFK to investigate something that was happening outside. Transcript here: http://forums.purepwnage.com/index.php? ... &p=1699811
John Doe returned to the computer by 9:06, but between 8:57 and then, Mr. Clean contacted me via cell phone. He said that this guy was fucking crazy, that he had a gun, and that I should tell him something. The conversation was cut short when John Doe returned.
After Doe came back to the computer, I pleaded with him to let Clean go, and he ignored that-
[Sat Apr 11 2009 09:06:48 PM] John Doe56733: WHAT DID KIRBY SMITH SAY?! [Sat Apr 11 2009 09:08:57 PM] warhaschanged: I don't know! Look, let him go! He didn't do a goddamn thing, and there's no reason for this! [Sat Apr 11 2009 09:09:33 PM] John Doe56733: well lets see... you were contacted by Kirby Smith....strike one [Sat Apr 11 2009 09:09:45 PM] John Doe56733: Strike 2) He knows things [Sat Apr 11 2009 09:10:09 PM] John Doe56733: Strike 3) We can't let YOU GUYS know that would be ever so...bad
By this point, I was simultaneously talking with PFC Benji. He suggested I gave Doe a false lead by mentioned Georgia, and I did. The conversation ended abruptly at 9:14pm.
A transcript of the second half of John Doe's conversation, as well as PFC Benji's conversation with me, can be found here: http://forums.purepwnage.com/index.php? ... &p=1699822
Now by around 9:41, I received another call from Mr. Clean- he managed to escape and was walking in an alley, to eventually find a shed. He stole a set of keys from John Doe when he attacked him, and one of the keys fit the shed lock. Inside, he located a Zapper (custom- black and silver, I believe) and a nunchuck. While he was walking, he told me that while he was talking with J4m3s earlier in the day, the power was cut in his house- and the next thing he knows, he's in a van with someone in a black suit, white shirt, and tie- this John Doe. They drove around for a while, and at some point John Doe opened a chat up, presumably with me, since the times matched up. He then got off the phone with me after securing his position in the shed, and spoke with Agent CaptainBaconMan.
Around 11:32, Mr. Clean called CaptainBaconMan and myself in a three-way conversation. I don't remember all of the details, but it was eventually decided that Clean needed to get out of that shed and start heading someplace. Clean mentioned that the terrain was a long paved road, with little places to hide. Eventually, he came to a hill, and when he reached the top, noticed a city that, according to him, was within 2 hours walking distance from his location. The conversation ended shortly thereafter.
12 April
Around 4:41 pm, ViRuS52 informed us that HQ servers were disrupted within those past 24 hours by some advanced form of a DDOS attack. With the inclusion of this and previous thoughts that there was a mole, it became confirmed that the forums at that point were no good to share critical mission on. Read the full message here: http://forums.purepwnage.com/index.php? ... &p=1700251
At 6:32, Agent j4m3s received a message from [PPGA] Lt. Mr. Clean over Steam, who really turned out to be Kirby Smith- he hacked into Clean's steam account in order to make the lines more secure. Smith asked for Clean's whereabouts, to which j4m3s couldn't respond. Smith, upset by this information, pressed j4m3s for relative thereabouts and Clean's number, both of which the Private provided. He left shortly thereafter, with a message that read: .May the South Rise again my friend.... A transcript may be found here: http://forums.purepwnage.com/index.php? ... &p=1700322
Around 8:15 Agent CaptainBaconMan received a conversation from Kirby Smith, but the log is, as of now, lost.
By 8:19, the members of Kilo Company were given information and were requested to assist us, as Cpl. PFC Benji was assisting us since the beginning.
At 10:23, ViRuS52 made a post officially declaring Mr. Clean missing. http://forums.purepwnage.com/index.php? ... &p=1700439
At 10:48, I called Mr. Clean's cellphone from my own to reach him. While I didn't speak to him personally, I did get a message, which said something to the effect of: He made it to the town, and that he's okay. He found a backpack on the side of the road, that contains a change of clothing, a journal, and other essential items. He has no idea where he is, and he made mention that his phone was likely going to die shortly. The message cut short after that.
10:54: A received another AIM from Kirby Smith. More agitated than before, he asked me where Clean was, to which I couldn't respond. After telling him that I reached his voicemail and mentioning the town, he claimed that that was 'good' and that 'we will see what we can do', and logged off. Transcript here: http://forums.purepwnage.com/index.php? ... &p=1700453
Kirby then contacted CaptBaconMan again at 10:55. The conversation was short: Korey Seaver9999: They've started tracking me here too Korey Seaver9999: I don't have time [SMRD] CaptainBaconMan [GFG]: Time for what? Korey Seaver9999: I managed to hack into Clean's steam but now they're tracking me again as we speak Korey Seaver9999: I can't stay here Korey Seaver9999 is now Offline.
13 April:
At 8:18 am, CaptainBaconMan posted information on various RL locations of Black Mesa. It was determined that Clean would likely be around the one based near New Mexico, but it wasn't guaranteed. http://forums.purepwnage.com/index.php? ... &p=1700645 (edit: It's since come to my attention that Pvt. Takeda Akatora had this information on the 11th, and posted links to the Black Mesa locations before CaptainBaconMan.)
By 10:10 AM, ViRuS52 gave an update on the DDOS situation: QUOTE /salute
Just a quick update ladies and gents - Our techies have been busy trying to tack down the source of the disruption the other day, and have so far found their way around the planet twice! Right now they are looking at a server cluster in Korea (<INSERT MANDATORY JOKE ABOUT KOREAN GOLD FARMERS HERE>), and we are quite convinced that we are *WAY* closer to them than they would like us to be at this moment because they keep hard-countering by changing their exchanges routing path and are throwing up proxies left, right and sodding center!
Give us another day or two and we should have this bastard nailed down
icon_wink.gif
Agent J4m3s, with Agent Takeda Akatora's assistance on the forums, quickly found a possible location for Mr. Clean- Kenton, OK. At 2:20pm, as j4m3s was leaving, he was attacked by a group of men in black suits, who were saying 'the generals are just the beginning'. He managed to escape, knocking out the supposed leader of the group while taking a hit in the shoulder during his escape. He has since been patched up by our fine medics, but it was determined by our intelligence analysts that the attack on the private and information gathered through his attackers were intentional red herrings to lead us off the trail.
4:08 PM: CaptainBaconMan, PFC Benji, and myself received a text message from Mr. Clean. It read: This is my last message out. I found a phonecharger and could only charge for a little bit. I did make contact with KS and managed to film most of our convo
We've yet to recover any video footage, however.
14 April:
Whispers of a possible mole infiltrating our ranks were getting around by this time. Everyone was real hot under the collar, and unfortunately, fingers were being pointed at people undeservedly and in haste. However! By 10:56 pm, a new face showed up in the forum- one ¥-M3t@lu§-¥٩(̾●̮̮̃̾•̃̾)۶. An unknown person with a sudden rank of GA Lt., she proceeded to lambaste people in the thread for their lack of teamwork, and was mocking people for their efforts. Her first post is here: http://forums.purepwnage.com/index.php? ... &p=1701859
And later on: QUOTE Been lurkin these forums for a while now, thought it was about time you all faced your foe! Just a shame that some of your top dogs were ~SOOOO~ persistant in persuing us that we had to change tactics now... still, I think we gave em a bit of a tour around the world! They should be thanking us for the free holliday really... ...I would say give up on finding your Lieutenant, caus maybe we have him again and maybe we think he's just too much of a cutie to let go!
... then again, maybe I'm bluffing, and we have about as much idea about where he is as you do. Do ya feel lucky, ~PUNK~?!
15 April (a few hours later):
By 12:21 AM, ViRuS52 managed to get a hold of this mysterious new Lt. and hand her over to the GA Inquisitors. http://forums.purepwnage.com/index.php? ... &p=1701967
At 10:33 AM, he replied with the following: QUOTE /salute
Sorry for the delayed response - the stockade guards were all like "oh hay you need to fill out these form it'll only take a sec"... freaking 8 bloody hours later I finish! Sodding bureaucrats... iconrtfm1mo.gif
*AHEM*, anyway, this... "Metalus"... bird is now firmly incarcerated, and awaiting a visit from those nice interrogators icon_twisted.gif It seems she came out of the woodwork just as our tech boys nailed down the location of the attacks from the other day (full details will be released shortly). I guess she felt the game was up or something and wanted to buy her comrades some time to gtfo. Ironically if she had just kept her mouth shut and carried on lurking like she has been, then it probably would have taken us at least another full day before we found her.
Still, what we have lost in time, we have gained in information. Some of her "Blaze-of-glory" ramblings from last night, together with some of the information she has up on her profile, has given us a rather useful insight into who we are dealing with - something which we didnt have before. And of course, the first rule of any form of warfare is -
QUOTE Know thy enemy
So, I would like to gratz you all on a job well done last night. Your quick actions and responses provoked her into giving up some invaluable pieces of info which will serve us well as we move forward. /salute
On the security front, It seems that she made it in through a 0-day backdoor exploit and managed to hijack an inactive account from back in 2004. Looks like she then went on to work the system and requisitioned enhanced privilages and fulsified info to make herself more difficult to detect. The techs have already implamented a quick-fix patch to plug some of the security holes, and are currently running scans to make sure we dont have any other unwanted guests hanging around. Early signs though do suggest that this was a one off, so I'm gunna previsionally declare the forums *SAFE* once again for discussions. I do however advise a small amount of caution when discussing highly sensitive info, just untill we can fully confirm that we have plugged all the gaps (why have I suddenly got an image of fingers and dykes in my head? icon_lol.gif)
Anyway once again, GJ guys and gals. Your work last night was fantastic! Keep it up everyone, and dont take your fingers off the pulse icon_wink.gif
/salute
Around 9:15 PM, I received information from Mr. Clean via cellphone. He mentioned that he was alright, and passed the following information along:
-He was South from the landing -He's in a city in Colorado, but a different state -The intersection of Mason and Blackjack 4
16 April:
At 12:21pm, we received a message from Mr. Smith: In Area. Will extract. Need location of Lt. -KS (ListGroup)
Apparently, he hacked into FPS_GUS's account to make that post.
At 7:24, there was a breakthrough- Agent MFK noticed that there was a Denver City Texas, which is relatively close to Mr. Clean's hometown. Seeing as how this matched the second piece of information from Clean, it was an excellent guess. MFK's original post here: http://forums.purepwnage.com/index.php? ... &p=1703022
At 10:46, MFK received a PM from Mr. Smith, confirming Denver City: QUOTE I do believe you are correct about Denver City. I am headed there now. However I think blackjack4 and mason is some sort of code. Maybe a street name.
By 11:45, through a discussion on Ventrilo, we believe we determined the location of the shed that Mr. Clean escaped to. Information and an image here: http://forums.purepwnage.com/index.php? ... &p=1703169
17 April (an hour later):
Agent j4m3s guessed at a possible location for clean- the intersection of highway 83 and Waterline Rd, but unfortunately, it was incorrect.http://forums.purepwnage.com/index.php? ... &p=1703179
At 12:52, Mr. Smith sent me a PM. He mentioned that he was going to be driving south on 214, heading into Denver City. Smith also mentioned that he felt that if he stopped for too long, he'll be found- and that Clean was in real danger.
18 April:
At 11:00 am, Mr. Smith left a post via FPS_GUS's account: Search continues for LT. Message was sent to biohazard no response. All pick up points mentioned are negative. Isn't blackjack 21? I have to stay on the move. Will continue search 04/19 at 900 hours. Need new search locations. -KS (DARPA)
He also sent me a message which stated that there was a leak in DARPA (Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency), and that he needs the help of the GA. He'd be providing trail info, and we were to follow the leads.
Around 12:10p, it was determined by j4m3s that Blackjack 4 was really a reference to 214, or Highway 214. One street down, and one more to go!
A few minutes later, I took a guess at the second street. With the references to Black Mesa, coupled with the fact that the Freemason society called themselves by a different name occasionally- Freeman- it was guessed that the intersection would be Freeman Road and Highway 214. I sent this information along to Mr. Smith, and at 12:32 he replied, saying that he'd attempt an extraction the next day in the AM.
19 April:
Finally, at 8:00 AM, Kirby Smith posted on the thread (using his own account): CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!! LT. is safe. GREAT JOB! to everyone. Your country needs you if your up for it. I will send email with instructions. That is all. http://forums.purepwnage.com/index.php? ... &p=1704504
And at 11:05, I received news from Mr. Clean: QUOTE Just got a phone call from Clean-
He's taking a taxi to HQ for debriefing! :3
When Mr. Smith met up with him, Clean said that Smith gave him a lead- Clean's going to email someone with the information for research purposes soon. He sounded tired, and I honestly can't blame him! Apparently Smith told him to take a cab back, and gave Clean a one dollar bill and a 1337 dollar bill, and Clean's all "wtf how am I supposed to get home with this" pp_smiley4.gif
And then Major General IW4 chastised us at 2:44 pm. http://forums.purepwnage.com/index.php? ... &p=1704661
Between 19 April and 25 April
The number of agents from all divisions have increased quite a bit- thank you all for participating!
21 April
I received a PM from Mr. Smith that read: QUOTE I will wait for your info. before I proceed. Florida , Where were you on 02-27-08?
An email was sent to Mr. Smith with varying soldier's contact information from around the globe who wished to participate.
23 April
Agent Cypherinthesystem received an email from Mr. Smith, which reads: QUOTE Fantastic work Cyperinthesystem. Your getting it! Three Drops made via snail mail. You are in south Florida. Where were you on 02/27/08? -KS(DARPA)
24 April
Agent SteelFox received the first drop from Mr. Smith via snail mail. Inside was a single piece of paper that read "Ghostnet". Check out the photos here: http://forums.purepwnage.com/index.php? ... &p=1707645
Through quick research, we've learned that the most likely reference is to the large-scale cyber spying operation that was discovered in March 2009 of the same name. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ghostnet
8:55 pm:
Much to everyone's relief, Mr. Clean made his epic(?) return to the forums. He discussed in detail what happened the day of his kidnapping, and his eventual pickup by Mr. Smith. You can read the details of his post here: http://forums.purepwnage.com/index.php? ... &p=1707755
He promised to have media up shortly, as he recorded his first conversation with Mr. Smith, and took pictures of awards granted to him by HQ, as well as a picture of the Zapper he found. You can see some of the pictures here: http://forums.purepwnage.com/index.php? ... &p=1707782
25 April
Mr. Clean posted a picture of the 1337 bill he received. http://forums.purepwnage.com/index.php? ... &p=1708154
4:29pm
Agent CaptainBaconMan received the second drop from Mr. Smith. It contained a cut piece of paper which said "Metalus is". Given the shape of the cuts from both drops, it's believed that the messages were together in one sentence. His post and pictures can be found here: http://forums.purepwnage.com/index.php? ... &p=1708213
26 April
PFC Benji posted the video files from Mr. Clean's cell phone; taken after he escaped from JOhn Doe and was walking around in Devner city, Texas. There are six videos in total- check the post here: http://forums.purepwnage.com/index.php? ... &p=1708464
27 April
The final piece of torn paper was dropped to Agent Takeda Akatora, which said 'Know your enemies'. With all of the pieces together, the complete sentence is 'Know your enemies Metalus is Ghostnet'
28 April
Agent Z0mb13 received a message from Mr. Smith which went as such: "First I want to thank you for your help in this mission. You are a good soldier! This info. is very important. Please pass it along.
MIT gave birth to Netspa. DARPA made a hybrid of including MyFip. It was stolen from SD&T in 1993. Destructive Internet Exe. Intrusion Endeavor."
It has since been revealed that D.I.X.I.E is the Destructive Internet Exe. Intrusion Endeavor.
The inital post with the message may be found here: http://forums.purepwnage.com/index.php? ... &p=1709738
Continue reading the page to see additional posts re: NetSPA, MyFip, and Ghostnet, as well as the post regarding D.I.X.I.E.
30 April
I received a voicemail from Mr. Smith, which when transcribed, went: hello amethyst, this is ks i just wanted to tell you good luck on your next assignment coming up, it will be arriving in 10 days well, good luck with that, and thank the troops for me bye
3 May
Mr. Smith made an alteration to his forum profile- on the about me page, he added additional information: [His ex-boss] was also a sheep farmer that was forced to resign in 1994. To my friends in the GA you will be puzzled by your next assignment in the mission.
Going from this, it's speculated that his former boss was James R. Woolsey, who was head of the CIA until 1995.
The notice of the profile change may be found here: http://forums.purepwnage.com/index.php? ... &p=1712259
And information on Woolsey found here: http://forums.purepwnage.com/index.php? ... &p=1712340
It turns out that we wouldn't have a lead on the puzzled bit of the profile until..
7 - 17 May
Mr. Smith changed his profile information once again. It now read: It seems the sheep thief made him lose his job. See what happens when you don't watch your sheep in the land of DIXIE!
It was also this day that Agent Z0mb13 received RL mail from Mr. Smith. Inside an envelope were two Spiderman and Friends puzzle pieces- and on the backs were pieces of a note. A video can be found here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=asewcvEhN-0
Other agents have continued to received puzzle pieces from this date on- they can be found as followed:

Starfire Delayed... =(
Pure Phonix News and Announcements Center

Hello again!
Haha well, it seems we've managed to pull a bit of a "Pure Pwnage" special on you all with regards to the release of the new Starfire system. Simply put, we have run into a couple of problems while setting up and testing, which I'll now outline for you all:
First of all, we've had some teathing problems with the new servers. We're still working out exactly what's causing it, but it seems after running for about a week or two, the SHOUTcast servers all simaltaneously suffer a large CPU spike and shut themselves down. As such, we're gunna need a bit more time to resolve this issue, although it looks like our best bet right now is to simply set up a server-side script to periodically restart the SHOUTcast servers and clear the caches. Will keep you guys updated as things develop there.
Secondly, we bumped into the age-old "legal red-tape" problem with regards to the Sonic Library "On-Demand" server. It turns out the services we were aiming to provide arent quite as legit as we had originally thought. Obviously we want to keep things within the bounds of the law so that we don't do anything that reflects badly on either ourselves or ROFLMAO. With that said however, we at Pure Phonix are stubbon fuckers, and refuse to give up on what we know is a concept made of epic win an justice for all, so we got the ROFLMAO Legal Team on the case:

(sorry, but how often do we get a legitimate excuse to use that pic? )
What we have discovered (as far as we can tell at least), the on-demand streaming aspect to the Sonic Libraries is, legally speaking, still "up in the air". Meaning that, while it is not legal, it is also not illegal either, and thus we can provide this service (for the time being at least) without breaking too much of a sweat.
The download aspect to the Sonic Libraries however was a bit more of a challenge. It seems that, while the big-boys in the music industry are all-too-eager to slam people for "stealing their m0nie$", they also do not provide any reasonable or easy method for those of us who do want to be legal to make ourselves so. Not too impressed with the whole experiance we must confess. The music industry (and the entertainment industry as a whole for that matter) needs to pull it's finger out of its bloody arse and embrace the changing face of technology, rather than resisting it like it's doing now (FYI - we aim that remark at the record companies rather than the artist's themselves )... but hay that's a rant for another day.
So, where does that leave us? Well long story short, we plan to use a small amount of advertising to allow you all X amount of free credits (which we are calling "Audio Credits", which translates to 1 credit = 1 song download) each week/month etc, BUT also allow you also to buy additional credits once your free ones have run out. This makes a shitload of sense to us, as it means you get a ristricted service for free, and a kind of "premium"/"unlimited" service at nominal cost, while also meaning that we ourselves can cover the cost of royalty fees and keep everything above board. Oh and dont worry - any credits you have (free or paid for) left at the end of the month (or week, whatever works best) will carry forward, so you are more than welcome to "save up" and go on a spending splurdge. Epic win for everyone really!
Of course, some of you may think "hay, there are sites out there already that do this, what makes Pure Phonix so speshulz??". Well, yeh we are certainly using that "legal download site" model as our foundation, but what is special about it will be some of the features we deck it out with. The main difference will be that the library itself will be user-generated - IE *YOU*, the end user, will be able to upload tracks to the archives! Think of the Sonic Libraries more as a hybrid between youtube and iTunes, and directed exclusively at music, and you're in the right kinda ballpark. Combine that with a (AFAIK) unique audio search facility and a sprinkling of other usefull features, and we're onto a winnar
Anyway, the third thing of course is the new PPSBP we mentioned. The front end of this is coming on nicely (will give you all a screenshot on the next update ), but the backend which deals with the actual broadcasting to the servers is being a bit of a sod to convert from C++ to Actionscript. We're getting there though, so hopefully it won't take us too much longer
So yeh, it's been a bit of a mindfuck, but we're getting there. Can't give an exact date, but we are certainly aiming for the next month or two (IE - "end of summer").
On a more positive note - remember the "And Beyond..." we noted in the last update? Well the observant among you will have spotted that a new placeholder link named "E-Phoria" appeared recently. This will be yet another Pure Phonix feature which will be developed after Starfire is up and running, which will make use of the Sonic Library quite heavily. We will go into more details about E-Phoria in the next update, but what we say is that the concept will most definatly blow your mind - *LITERALLY*! Stay tuned for more news on that ____________________

Starfire *UNLEASHED*!!
Pure Phonix News and Announcements Center
|
Good evening ladies and gents!
Ok, so it's been a while since our last update, and alot of you may have noticed that Pure Phonix has been somewhat inactive lately. We've been letting things idle a bit because we have been busy beevering away in the background on some *MAJOR* system upgrades! Can't see them? No, you won't. The changes that are being made are largely back-end changes, and any transferes that have affected the front end have been by-and-large, seemless transitions.
So what has happened? Well, the real biggy is that, due to being valued customers of Dreamhost, Pure Phonix is now hosted on a spanky new Dreamhost Vitual Private Server (VPS) which we have personally named "Starfire"! What this means is that, as with all of Dreamhost's VPS customers, we now have shell access to the server and allows us to run server-side programs. Combined with no bandwidth cap and "unlimited" (as far as is physically possible) storage space that we were paying for anyway, we have finally been able to rig up our very own custom SHOUTast servers!
Before the switch, the shoutcast servers for Pure Phonix were managed by a company called "mouse-to-mouse". This limited us (as it was all we could afford - $24 per month) to the old 3 servers with around 20 listeners each, 5gig of storage (for the auto-dj), and a stream rate of 196kbps. Now we are paying just $10 per month for the VPS on Dreamhost, and what do we get for our cash? 1200 listeners *ACROSS* our servers (we can transfer listerner cap as we like, so we could have 3 servers with 300 listener cap, 5 servers with 200 listener cap, or 1 server with about 1200 listeners if we really want!), *UNLIMITED* storage for *BOTH* auto-DJ *AND* a new service we plan to provide - "On-Demand Content", and to top it all off we can stream our services at whatever-the-fuck bitrate we bloody well please!
So long story short, we are now able to have *COMPLETE* control at shell level over the servers. We can adjust settings to pretty much whatever we like on-the-fly, and it doesnt cost us any extra. In addition, we can make custom addons and enhancements for the servers because they are completly ours (although "stored", so-to-speak on our Dreamhost VPS). This has completley opened up all the doors for us, and allowed us to do things that we could only dream of with the old setup. Here is just a small teaser of some of the OMFGBBQH4X stuff we have planned for realease in the very near future:
- Pure Phonix Shoutcast Broadcaster Platform (SBP) - This is a brand new flash-based program currently in development by Pure Phonix. One of the major problems of the past with DJ's has been that there isn't one Broadcaster program that "has it all". SAM Broadcaster for example had a wealth of features, but lacked some of the usefull ones from Virtual DJ (and vice-versa). In addition, niether were free like the Winamp DSP plugin, but the DSP wasnt as fully featured as SAM or VDJ. The Pure Phonix SBP aims to give Pure Phonix DJ's a no-cost, installation-free, fully tailored interface to broadcast from. They wont even need to worry about server connection details anymore, as that will be handled and controled server-side!
And yes before you ask - this *WILL* incorporate the long-awaited DJ Scheduling System!
- Pure Phonix Sonic Library (On-Demand Content) - A feature we have simply not had access to in the past, but which is intrinsically supported by the SHOUTcast server program. It essentially allows listeners to listen to specific mp3's stored in the Pure Phonix archives when *THEY* feel like it. We plan to make available... well, *EVERYTHING*! Auto-dj for both PPR and CGMR is obviously a given, but we also have the ability now to have the servers auto-record and save DJ broadcasts too! This means if you miss your favorite broadcast, you can catch up by paying the PP Sonic Library a little visit!

- 24-7 Broadcasting - Due to the new setup and soon-to-be-implamented scheduling system, we will now be able to broadcast 24-7! Any dead space between (human) DJ broadcasts will be filled by the 133.7 Pure Phonix Radio auto-DJ (which will be able to tap into the scheduling system so unlike in the past, the DJ's will NOT be constantly tripping over it!) which will pull files out of the Sonic Library, and provide spurious news and information broadcasts. This will mean you can tune in anytime, and there will be *SOMETHING* for you all to listen to!

- The Basement Radio release to the public - TBR has proven useful in our testing of various SHOUTcast-centric systems and has been a great way of introducing prospective DJ's to the SHOUTcast system. The server has however seen only sporadic usage over its lifetime, and given that we have the ability to throw up test servers as and when we want now (thus making TBH rather redundent), we decided to take the rather radical step of opening the server up and allowing *ANYONE* from the Pure Pwnage community the ability to have a go at DJing themselves! This will hopefully encourage the Pure Pwnage community to take a greater part in what is, after all, a Pure Pwnage Community project. Epic win for everyone really
<333
- PP-CNC Official Supporters - For those who haven't already seen it, Ph0bia has created the Pure Pwnage Community News Center, and we at Pure Phonix are happy to announce that we will be (and have been) working closely with Ph0bia and his PP-CNC team, and will be broadcasting audio versions of their video podcasts on a regular basis once things get going.
- And Beyond - With the servers completly under our control now, who knows what hights we will take things to?? With all the untapped potential of the new systems still yet to be explored, and even talks of some crazy new ideas like webcam streaming capabilities for DJ's, the skies are really the limits for our humble little project!

So that's a fair overview of things. When is all this coming? Well, alot of it is alread nearing compleation, and the rest is well within our capabilities. End of June is looking like a rather promising target for the new Starfire system to go live (thats when the mouse-to-mouse servers expire anyway haha!) So yeh, some big stuff comin guys, stay tuned! ____________________
